As the Catechism
of the Catholic Church makes clear: «The natural
law, present in the heart
of each man and established by reason, is
universal in its precepts and its
authority extends to all men» (1956).
Thus support for human rights in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities follows a pattern: each group believes that the
Universal Declaration
of Human Rights and other human rights standards established through international
law derive
authority from the teachings
of its own religious tradition.
