The Healthy Steps for Young Children
program (HS) was designed to
support families of young children using a new type of health care provider, the HS specialist (HSS), in a practice - based intervention.1 The HS consists of risk reduction activities and
universal components, including developmental screening, anticipatory guidance, and follow - up services, offered to all families receiving care.2 - 5 Expected benefits of HS include improved parental promotion of child development, 6

Supporting the role and capacity of

parenting programs, child health and allied health services jointly delivered and co-located on or near school sites — must be a priority.
This is most expediently achieved through the development of
universal programs that target entry into high school and provide education and
support regarding transitions in the
parent - child relationships and effective
parenting skills.

parents choose a particular
program — cost, location, the teachers, shared values, the
program's specific focus — one thing is
universal: As
parents walk away from the classroom in the morning to start their own day, each of them hopes that they have made the right decision and that their child will have a rich and fulfilling day,
supported by a loving and affectionate caregiver.
Because pediatricians have nearly
universal, relatively frequent and recurring contact with young children and their families, they are uniquely well positioned to have an impact on developmental outcomes through anticipatory guidance at well - child visits, early developmental screening, practice - based developmental interventions, community linkage and referral
programs, and advocacy for broader social change to
support child development.40 — 44 This study reinforces the potential benefits of practice - based
programs that
