So when puppy mills are
breeding sick, behaviorally
unsound animals, where should someone go to find a dog?
Uninformed
breeding is very common, and is a primary factor in the number of
unsound or unwanted dogs.
There was very little interest in a
breed that had degenerated into a weedy, shallow, common - headed,
unsound dog as compared to the fabulous Standard Bullies of the day.
However, some breeders consider these «differences» to be
unsound generalizations and that American standards should be updated to reflect the
breed's standard in its country of origin, i.e. France, where black has become an acceptable coat color since 1956 while it is still considered a fault in America.
This means that they frequently
breed dogs that are genetically
unsound, dogs that carry genetic conditions or «faults» that not only dilute the gene pool for that
breed but also prove to be painful for the dog in the future.
Backyard breeders are not particularly knowledgeable about their
breed, dogs in general, genetics or the
breeding proceedure, and the puppies they produce are low quality, possibly sick or tempermentally
unsound.
The reason these puppies so often end up sickly and mentally disturbed is that no screening of
breeding stock is done - sick,
unsound, unstable dogs are
bred to produce more ailments in the next generation; also, puppies born in mills and then transferred over to petshops do not receive the proper early socialization which may result in behavioral problems later in life.
Puppies produced by breeders who sell their animals to pet shops (where the unsuspecting public fall in love with and purchase them) are many times sickly and
unsound both physically and mentally, and are almost always poor examples of their
breed conformation-wise.
Unsound hip joints are a common problem in the larger
breeds, and hip dysplasia can be a serious problem in any dog, especially if that is to be trained for a demanding activity.
