conditions, contributions to the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans» annual State of the Pacific
Ocean Report and occasional PCIC newsletter pieces when

To assess the role played by climate change in the
unusual conditions, the research team turned to historical meteorological observations to conduct an analysis segregating the contribution of pressure patterns and other factors, like
ocean temperatures, to rainfall variability.
All that said, with all the talk about the
conditions combining to make this such an
unusual storm, there's one thing that really caught my eye, yet hasn't been reported ad nauseum yet: Higher than normal
ocean temperatures in the Northeast, may make all of this worse.
Virtually all coral records currently available from the tropical Indo - Pacific indicate
unusual warmth in the 20th century (Cole, 2003), and in the tropical Indian
Ocean many isotope records show a trend towards warmer
conditions (Charles et al., 1997; Kuhnert et al., 1999; Cole et al., 2000).
