At some point between March 11 and March 13
of 2011 I picked
up a
controller at PAX East and began playing a delightful little
game that had theretofore been an unknown to me and was instantly captivated.
I'm sitting in my childhood living room on the weekend playing the mine cart levels
of Donkey Kong Country, suddenly; I'm at my daycare waiting for the bus to arrive passing Nintendo 64 and Playstation One
controllers around while my friends and I play a large selection
of open world collect»em
up games, finally; I look around again and I'm laying in bed watching Let's Plays and videos
of classic
games I had missed out on like Glover and Banjo Kazooie.
If it keeps the cool Career mode, Custom Boxer Creation, decent polygon models and line -
up of solid fighters (tossing out everything else, especially the awful «toggle active hand»
controller configuration), it could have the basis on which to rebuild a better
game next year.
Pix the Cat is one
of those
games that looks easy when you're watching someone else play but once you pick
up the
controller yourself; you'll be surprised at how challenging and intricate the gameplay is.
Until I see the
game running smoothly on (base) consoles and being playable on
controllers without having to tinker with settings, I will perceive pCARS 2 as the title playing catch -
up with the likes
of Gran Turismo and Forza.
Skydrift is one
of the best looking Xbox Live Arcade
games to date; a bold statement indeed but as soon as you pick
up your
controller and start flying, you are likely to agree wholeheartedly.
At the end
of the battle the
game uses the PlayStation 4's camera to take a picture
of you where you can hold
up your catch using the PlayStation Move
controllers.
If you load
up the
game, stand on the corner
of a busy street in Los Santos and put down the
controller, interesting things will still happen.
Playing Finny the Fish & the Seven Waters was about as close as I come to relaxed reverie with a
controller in my hand these days, and I'm glad that Natsume took a risk (and will likely take a loss) by bringing such a refreshingly quirky niche
game to break
up the monotony
of infinite WWII recreations, look - alike FPSs, and customizable racing
games currently boring the hell out
of me.
The greatest change with the console version
of the
game is that it forgoes the traditional mouse and keyboard interface
of the PC in favor
of a
controller set -
up.
sadly, too many people are so used to being able to just pick
up a
controller and master a
game that a lot
of them are getting turned off from this deep experience...

While console - style
games will likely use them both as left and right halves
of a whole, the Switch actually sees each Joy - Con as its own
controller, and it allows
up to eight
of them.

game was first made popular in the GameCube era, and although its multiplayer takes a little bit to set
up (what with the needed JoyCon
controllers and all), it's a great deal
of fun, as one
of you plays Pac - Man and the others the ghosts trying to devour him.

Part
of the problem is because Port Royale 3 offers
up a lot
of options and thus cramming them all onto a
controller is a tricky task, especially since this is a PC
game in disguise, but the brunt
of the issue simply comes down the fact that it's a clumsy control system that makes doing the most basic
of things feel awkward.
Amidst the seemingly never - ending accusations that people are spending far too much time staring at their screen
gamers are putting down their
controllers and picking
up decks
of cards and dice, and it's absolutely amazing.
Before jumping into the deep end
of customization, I fired
up a fully
controller supported
game using the recommended
controller configuration.
In the most part, the
game makes use
of an analog stick and standard buttons to move and attack — But occasionally with performing particular moves, a quick - time event flashes
up with a direction in which to swing the Wiimote / Move
controller.
The
game is locked to 30 FPS on PC, there's already montage videos
of glitches, sound issues are cropping
up for everyone, the control scheme is pretty backwards with no way to fix it on a
controller, and they hid all
of this with a ridiculous review copy embargo set to the day
of release.
Commander mode and Levolution are both interesting new features, and the quality
of the maps is certainly notably improved, but pick
up the
controller and play the
game for a few hours and you'd easily be fooled into thinking you playing an expansion pack for Battlefield 4.
As with most strategy
games Tropico 4 was built around the PC and with the vast amounts
of buildings and the wealth
of micro-management options available for building and individual citizens the
controller has a little bit
of trouble keeping
up.
I don't want Nintendo to change the type
of games or quirky
controllers they make, I want them to improve and catch
up to Sony and Microsoft on the hardware side and software.
With Mortal Kombat
games and their relatively different combos that tend to use left, right,
up, and down a lot, I actually prefer standard
controllers over even FightSticks simply because the d - pad is better suited to it, and you don't need a ton
of buttons either.
There have been several instances, where I would have either the Joy - Cons or the Pro
Controller hooked
up and I would get no input outside
of touch controls, making me go back to Settings, re-pair the
controller, and re-enter the
game to use the button controls.
The amazing amount
of support riding behind Ouya tells me that there are a lot
of gamers like me that want to see something that can easily hook
up to my TV with a
controller and have fun playing indie
games.
A good set
of game modes is crucial for a
game like this, where the basis alone couldn't offer you any variety and thankfully the
game modes in Racers are a lot
of fun, especially if you have more than one
controller hooked
up at a time (the
game supports
up to 7 players on screen at once!)
As far as
Game Modes, you have tons
of Word Searches, divided by categories, to conquer, as well as a built - in Multiplayer Co-Op feature, where you and
up to 3 others can work on solving the puzzle together with different
controllers, or online over the Internet.
At first it made me think
of the Growlanser
game where you could play a DDR - style
game on the 2nd
controller to power
up your attacks, but this one doesn't seem quite so elaborate at first glance.
Previously a hit PC
game, the developers have described this as a
game best suited to a
controller, so the DualShock 4 version
of this interesting looking title is set -
up to be the definitive version
of the
game.
But even if there are side missions to do, when I finish a main plot line in a
game, I think to myself; «well that's that», I just feel everything else is like I'm there to pick
up after the NPC's, I feel that the main problem is gone, the princess is saved, I don't care if I you want me to collect 10
of these, to make 5
of these so this can have that, its tedious and I've done my job, that's when I put my
controller down, that's when I never touch the
game again... or at least for an extended period
of time.

Halo 2 is a
game that may not be the rockstar
of the series but playing the
game with the help
of the Xbox One
controller definitely warrants a replay, If you are
up for it too you can choose to indulge yourself in some Halo: Combat Evolved and be ready for Halo announcements at the upcoming E3 conference, Let's hope more announcements come for Microsoft announcing PC
games to Steam now that
Games for WIndows Live is officially dead and buried and now the framework for the current
games is being worked towards bringing the
games over to Steamworks with Fable Anniversary being the first to do so.
In this
game, you play the eponymous fruit ninja, using the Touch
controllers as your swords to slice through several different types
of fruit to rack
up a high score and impress your sensei.
Lots
of new
game modes help to mix things
up and keep the
game fresh however playing on a
controller is nowhere near as precise as playing on a PC with a mouse.
With E3 just around the corner (starting
up tomorrow for Microsoft) MOGA the current leader in smartphone
game controllers announced on June 7th the new wave
of their gaming
controller line called «The MOGA Power Series».
However, things are looking
up for the Apple TV, with news
of the ability to require the use
of game controllers as outlined at WWDC and also upcoming
games such as Dungeon Tiles, which has even managed to win mobile marketing company AppLovin's $ 25,000 «Apple TV App Challenge» prize and launches on Apple TV and iOS for free on the June 29th...
The
game mechanics are extremely easy to learn, can be enjoyed by anyone who decides to pick
up the
controller and the large selection
of characters really does make the
game alot
of fun.
Anyone else think it's funny that Nintendo went all in this tablet, effectively forcing us to buy a very expensive
controller while putting
up with last gen hardware, and they might switch out Nintendo Land, which is still the best demonstration
of the
controller, for a ten year old
game that doesn't need the tablet at all?
