Find the
DOC file you previously saved and
upload it - the system will automatically convert your word
file to Kindle format.
This is one of the more important stages in
uploading your book as you can now check to see how well it is formatted - if you are not happy, go back to the
DOC file and amend accordingly.
I know lots of folks who have no problem
uploading HTML or
DOC files, but this has been the process that works for me.
If you're using a 2WAY template from Book Design Templates in Word, and
uploading doc and docx
files to KDP and Smashwords, you can use the same
file and the headers and footers will be stripped out automatically.
What you need to know before you
upload your

I recommend using Sigil because it's a free program and because it allows you to create a clean, optimized
file — I've had a lot of trouble with Calibre in the past, getting error messages and then not being able to
upload to different distribution channels, and straight up Word
doc conversions tend to be messy and end up not looking the way I want.
You can
upload files in a number of formats to KDP: Kindle's native mobi format, the universal ePub format, HTML, a PDF [*], and, of course, our friend the Word
doc.
Once you've
uploaded the Word
doc (or other
file), you can preview the conversion online — and edit, to a certain extent.
If you are
uploading a
doc or txt
file and you didn't already put your cover image into the document, you should say «yes» here.
