of all,

occasion becomes a superject; that is, it objectifies itself so that it can be prehended by later
occasions (PR 219f / 335f).

of the consequent nature flow from the primordial nature, and though the former does not fit the present actual
occasions into a ready - made pattern
of the temporal past (as Ford carefully points out: IPQ 13:356), yet «the weaving
of Cod's physical feelings
upon his primordial concepts (PR 524) amounts to the emergence into time, as predicates
of God's propositional feelings,
of the very valuations
of his nontemporal decision.
The value
of an
occasion depends in part
upon what it does with the world presented to it.
This composition can be greater or less only insofar as what it includes is greater or less, so that the value for the whole depends

of inheritance, so that personal mentality may combine originality
of response with an adequate order

If for example the Christian Gospels are considered by themselves without any background
of definite belief, or any authoritative norm
of interpretation, all sorts
of meanings can be put
upon the bare words, the more so if the critic is ready and willing to make the early disciples
of Christ neurotics, hysterics, or downright liars as the

Whitehead's method, in part, is to analyze these
occasions of subjective experience in order to find factors capable
of being generalized into principles applicable to all actual entities: «In describing the capacities, realized or unrealized,
of an actual
occasion, we have... tacitly taken human experience as an example
upon which to found the generalized description required for metaphysics» (PR 172).
These
occasions are such as to lay necessities
upon whatever follows them, and this character
of occasions, insofar as it determines that the future will be characterized by extensiveness, is the potentiality that is the extensive continuum.
The intuition that I, with my conscious experience, am an actual individual with the power
of self - determination, to make decisions and to cause my body to do my bidding, is reconciled with the equally strong sense that my body is real, and that it exerts powerful causation
upon me, in terms
of the speculative hypothesis that all actual
occasions are
occasions of experience, so that interaction
of body and mind is not the unintelligible interaction
of unlikes (the unintelligibility
of which has led philosophers to deny the distinct actuality either
of the mind or
of the body).
Evidently in trying to understand natural moments and how they stand to each other Santayana is concerned with just those issues with which Whitehead is coping in his discussion
of the constitution
of actual
occasions and their influence
upon one another.
The justification for any relevance extending beyond actuality would have to depend
upon the internal relatedness
of the eternal objects ordered as a realm, The
occasion incorporates these new elements in forming its «ideal
of itself by reference to eternal principles
of valuation.»
