In some cats, the virus induces severe upper respiratory disease, and a few of these cats may develop persistent
upper respiratory symptoms for years.
Kennel Cough is a fairly minor illness, but it can cause a cough and
upper respiratory symptoms for a fairly long time.

The
symptoms are
for the most part non-specific and easily confused with other self - limited acute illnesses such as
upper respiratory viral infections, or with chronic problems, such as sinusitis, rhinitis, and bronchitis.
Vaccination is unlikely to be completely preventive
for the
upper respiratory viruses and is instead meant to minimize the severity of the
symptoms.
Because H3N2
symptoms are similar to those of other
upper respiratory infections, and full protection requires two vaccinations and 30 days, this virus is extremely threatening
for our community's shelters and our beloved pets.
The bacterium can be «carried» by dogs in their
upper respiratory tract (most likely their tonsils) without showing any
symptoms of disease and it is likely that, as yet unknown, bacterial, host or environmental factors, possibly including an over-exuberant immune response to the bacteria, are responsible
for the severe pneumonia observed in the worst cases.
Based on that, HSUS recommends that you separate any new cat from your other cats
for at least three weeks until you are sure they don't have any
symptoms of
upper respiratory infections.
