urban agriculture research to create innovative metrics and a comprehensive strategy for expanding NYC's capabilities.
RUAF partners analysed the roles of women and men in urban food production in 16 cities from three developing regions and tested guidelines guidelines and tools to bring women into the mainstream of

In light of the growing pressures from

RUAF collaborates with local authorities,

urban producers and other stakeholders in the assessment of the

urban food provisioning, for which the RUAF Foundation prepared an inventory and critical analysis of innovative experiences with short food supply chains in (peri --RRB-

The focus of the
Urban Agriculture Magazine is on: «
Research into Use» and «Policy to Practice».
He says one thing that surprised them in their
research was that increasing
urban agriculture on vacant land was not likely to cut emissions by much.
Although the head offices of most agricultural
research and extension organisations are located in the cities,
urban agriculture is often not a priority on the
research agenda and
urban producers access to technical advice and training services is often rather limited and its content and focus often are not well adapted to the conditions in the
urban environment.
Based upon this, the Conference will look ahead and elaborate new approaches for management and
research in the field of global
urban agriculture.
For example, the Cape Town policy on
urban agriculture (South Africa) calls upon the services of the
research, training and support organisations in and around the city to provide the
urban farmers with training on business administration, technical skills, marketing, etc..
Municipalities can provide budget and expertise for local technology development, and / or to stimulate
research organisations and universities to put
urban agriculture issues on their
research agenda and to undertake participatory action -
research with
urban producers.

The Expert consultation on Appropriate
Research and Planning Methodologies for (Intra - and Peri --RRB-
Urban Agriculture was jointly organised by RUAF and the Strategic Initiative on
Urban and peri-
Urban Agriculture of the CGIAR (international Agricultural
Research Centres) and
Urban Management Programme in Latin America of UNDP and UN Habitat.
Staff of local governments,
research organisations and NGOs participating in the UN Habitat Cities and Climate Change Programme and in 2 CDKN - funded projects were trained on the potential impacts of
urban agriculture and - forestry on climate change adaptation and mitigation, and on practical methods for monitoring them; climate - smart
urban agriculture technologies; and the design and assessment of alternative strategies for the development of
urban agriculture as part of city climate change strategies.
Further
research on
urban agriculture needs to be carried out, looking specifically at models producing commercial quantities of food.
In such analysis, design, implementation and monitoring, RUAF always incorporates proper attention to gender issues (see also the

In order to further enhance the recognition and visibility of
urban agriculture and its contributions to food security and social inclusion among bilateral and multinational donors, RUAF also implements
research and produces reports, facts sheets, policy narratives and briefs.
Gender mainstreaming in
research and action projects on
urban agriculture has been facilitated by producing a book with tested guidelines and tools (per phase of the project cycle) and a series of project case studies.
If
urban agriculture is to meet its potential to contribute to a more sustainable, just and equitable food system, more
research is needed to demonstrate its benefits and to support the work that
urban agriculturalists worldwide are doing.
RUAF partners IGSNRR, IWMI and IPES implemented
research on productive reuse of
urban water (including storm and wastewater) in
urban agriculture in Beijing (China), Accra (Ghana) and Lima (Peru); RUAF partner ETC (the Netherlands) systematised the results of the three studies.
