Two recent studies, one
by Joshua Angrist and colleagues and another
by Matthew Johnson and colleagues, found that attendance at
urban charter middle
schools with high behavioral expectations is associated with a higher number of days suspended relative to attendance at traditional
schools in the same districts.
According to a 2015 study
by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University, students enrolled in
urban charter schools gained 40 additional days of learning in math per year and 28 additional days in reading compared to students in district
schools.
By 2004 Rosenstock had created a network of 16 more
urban High Tech High
charter schools, in California, Arizona, Illinois, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.
Over the past decade, a growing number of
urban school districts have responded to the presence of
charter schools by providing some of their own
schools the same flexibilities that
charters enjoy.
But these children will also need great
schools led
by amazing educators, and
urban charter schools are among the most cost - effective way to provide these children the
schools that they deserve.
One finds little variation in the degree of satisfaction with
charter schools by region: across the country, more than 60 percent of parents in
urban, suburban, and rural communities say they are very satisfied with the
charter school that their child is attending.

charter reformers who know the city well, and ignore the possibility that Detroit
charters are taking advantage of loose oversight
by cherry - picking students, and ignore the very low test score growth in Detroit compared with other cities on the
urban NAEP, and ignore the policy alternatives that seem to work better (for example, closing low - performing
charter schools), and ignore the very low scores to which Detroit
charters are being compared, and ignore the negative effects of virtual
schools, and ignore the negative effects of the only statewide voucher programs that provide the best comparisons with DeVos's national agenda.
But it's
by no means guaranteed; we must bear in mind that despite a half century of
urban - district struggles, many public - education advocates still oppose
charter schooling.
