Critics of the report pointed to the report's «new age, neo-naturalist» stance, noting that the nutrition scientists at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (now the DHHS), who
urged caution in the face of the limited science on nutrition and chronic disease, could not compete with this popular ideology either for public support or for government funds for
additional research.21
