This game
uses images from the board game and can be played solo or with groups for more starting sound /
grapheme matching fun.
The tests are designed to test understanding of
grapheme - phoneme correspondences - i.e. their ability to sound out words
using the phonics system - which requires them to read out 20 real words and 20 made up words.
Each character tells you about its
grapheme and
uses sounds spots to support reading and spelling.
The purpose of phonics is to quickly develop pupils» phonemic awareness, which is their ability to hear, identify, and
use phonemes (the smallest unit of spoken language), and to teach them the relationship between phonemes and the
graphemes (a letter or combination of letters
used to represent a phoneme) that represent them.
Phonics teaching involves six phases in which children learn how to read and spell
using progressively harder phonemes and
graphemes — sounds and the letters that represent them.
