food deserts using urban gardening, and although their approaches are all unique, Koch, Chov and Mahaba all describe the process of starting a community garden
in similar ways.
He read the Lives of the Fathers and wondered at the austerities of the
desert hermits: «I
used to imagine such a saint, who would live
in the
desert, and abstain from
food and drink and live on a few vegetables and roots and cold water.»

Ultimately we ended up scrapping most of our original plan
in order to
use up the vegetables, fruits and proteins that needed eating immediately (fresh

in food deserts throughout DC, created and implemented an 8 - week long nutrition education lesson to at risk adults during their culinary job training program and assisted
in using donated
food to provide menus and
food for nearly 5000 homeless adults daily.

While the idea of plants — and yes, even weeds — outwitting their chemical executioners may be admittedly attractive

deserts» kind of way, the bottom line is that we need to be
using other methods to keep weeds from threatening
food supplies.
