Let us think
of process philosophy as a method designed for
use on such occasions, evoked by such disputes as an instrument
of reasonable good sense and creative imagination, one that will serve to fix what had broken down and to get things running smoothly once again.
But the question is one that must be faced by any
process philosophy or theology which sets out to
use an analysis
of human experience as a basis for characterizing God.
Or one might claim that, even though there are different
uses of the term «experience», there is still something common to all or many
of those
uses and that
process philosophy and theology are constructed around and from an account
of an essence common to many different kinds
of experience.
At any rate, Deleuze himself invites the comparison, referring to
Process and Reality as «one
of the greatest books
of modern
philosophy,» and linking his own
use of «descriptive notions» to that deployment
of «empirico - ideal notions [which] we find in Whitehead» (cf. D&R 284).
It will be useful at the outset to distinguish two matters that the very title
of this response tends confusingly to run together, viz., (1) «Hermeneutics,» in particular hermeneutics as shaped by commitments to the conceptuality and doctrines
of process philosophy, and (2) the
use of Scripture - as - interpreted in the course
of doing theology.
However, I believe that there is a notion in
process philosophy by which one could,
using the same self - body analogy, more adequately explain what would constitute a «special» act
of God, and thereby better explain how Jesus could be God's decisive act.
Since the theme
of this symposium is the meaning
of process thought for us, my paper will discuss the
use that I have made
of this mode
of thinking to articulate and develop my views, especially in the
philosophy of religion.
One can
use the expressions «
Philosophy After Whitehead» or «Post-Whiteheadian philosophizing» to characterize the relationship
of the work
of some philosophers to the categoreal insights presented in
Process and Reality, but in my own case I feel that these expressions connote a looser relationship than that which characterizes my own orientation.
But it is different from traditional theology in that it
uses the
process philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead (instead
of Plato or Aristotle) to express and integrate that belief into our contemporary perception
of reality — a perception which is increasingly sensitive to integration and change as the fundamental reality.
While
using a conceptuality largely framed by
process philosophy, it addresses for the most part the historically contingent elements within the Christian tradition: the biblical witness to Israel and to Jesus, his role as the Christ, the meaning
of his death and resurrection, and the implications
of the Christian proclamation
of the Trinity.
