I can see that a woman who has under -
used pelvic floor muscles could benefit from Kegels, but once the woman's posture is optimised, and her pelvic floor and other muscles are actively engaged, these muscles will exercise themselves with everyday movement, as the two halves of the pelvis move forward and back with our gait, one foot then the other.
When you're able to successfully start and stop urinating, or you feel the vaginal muscle contract, you are
using your pelvic floor muscle, the muscle you should be contracting during Kegel exercises.
Also, it's not wise to avoid
using your pelvic floor muscles during delivery in an attempt to avoid pooping.
The logic behind this theory is that
you use your pelvic floor muscles to voluntarily stop the flow of urine, hence if you can stop the flow while urinating, you will know whether or not you can successfully contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles.
The first step for me was learning to
use the pelvic floor muscles to counter nutate the sacrum.

Additionally, nurse practitioners and women's health physical therapists can collect additional quantitative data confirming the diagnosis of PFD by
using electromyographics (EMG), which measure the activation and relaxation patterns of
pelvic floor muscles.
The
use of biofeedback devices can be
used to re-educate the
pelvic floor musculature and re-train
muscles which may be weak or dysfunctional from prolonged periods of straining (5).
After reviewing your health history with you an internal exam may be
used to properly assess the
muscles of your
pelvic floor.
Dr. Arnold Kegel started teaching
pelvic floor contraction exercises in the 1940s by
using internal palpation to cue the proper
muscles.
In fact, the way you
use your entire body, throughout the day will affect how well your
pelvic floor muscles can function.
You get a temporary flat stomach that looks fantastic on the beach, but you also get a tucked pelvis, no butt
muscles used when walking, no real core engagement, and excessive friction in the lumbar spine, hips and knees... and a hypertonic
pelvic floor.
It boosts metabolism, improves bone mineral density, and just plain feels AWESOME to be strong and sturdy... However, you must be able to effectively
use your

use your Jade Egg and when appropriate — to correct for any dysfunction.
This therapy consists of
using biofeedback to measure and encourage both relaxation and strengthening of the
pelvic floor muscles.
