Cree Research, a small company in Durham, North Carolina,
uses silicon carbide in LEDs which emit at 470 nanometres in the blue region of the visible spectrum, but each chip generates only a modest 12 millicandelas.

«There are many different forms of
silicon carbide, and some of them are commonly
used today in electronics and optoelectronics,» Awschalom said.
