«If I were to pinpoint the exact moment that initiated the process of bringing this exhibition to fruition, it would be the acquisition of the artist's graphic score Graffiti Composition,» says Whitney curator David
Kiehl, referring to a project undertaken from 1996 to 2002, in which Marclay papered the streets of Berlin with 5,000 sheets of blank staff paper,
used for musical notation.
In
Kiehl and Trenberth 1997, they find a 155 W / m2 total greenhouse effect for approximately present - day Earth conditions (among the approximations: surface is a perfect (isothermal **) blackbody, and the
use a representative 1 - dimensional atmospheric column (instead of seperate calculations for each location over the globe at each time over the course of a period of time sufficient to describe a climatic state — but note righthand side of p. 200, just past halfway down the column)... a few other things).
The
Kiehl - Trenberth diagram is uncontroversial in
using 0.3.
Specifically, when he looked at the climate models
used by the IPCC,
Kiehl found they all
used very different assumptions for aerosol cooling and, most significantly, he found that each of these varying assumptions were exactly what was required to combine with that model's unique sensitivity assumptions to reproduce historical temperatures.
The GCMs
use the radiative forcing paradigm, well - represented by the
Kiehl - Trenberth (1997) lumped parameter model.

Kiehl et al. (2000) improve the treatment of relative humidity compared to
Kiehl and Briegleb (1993) and
Kiehl and Rodhe (1995) by improving the relative humidity dependence of the aerosol optical properties and by
using interactive GCM relative humidities rather than monthly mean ECMWF analyses, resulting in a larger normalised radiative forcing.
These studies
use either three - dimensional observed fields of for example, clouds, relative humidity and surface reflectance (e.g.,
Kiehl and Briegleb, 1993; Myhre et al., 1998c), or GCM generated fields (e.g., Boucher and Anderson, 1995; Haywood et al., 1997a) together with the prescribed aerosol distributions from CTMs and detailed radiative transfer codes in calculating the radiative forcing.
Kiehl et al. (1999) also present results
using a very different set of O3 change profiles deduced from satellite - derived total column O3 and satellite - inferred tropospheric O3 measurements to arrive at an implied O3 forcing, considering changes at and above the tropopause, of 0.01 Wm - 2.
The
use of monthly mean relative humidity fields in some of the calculations leads to lower radiative forcings as temporal variations in relative humidity and associated non-linear effects are not accounted for (e.g.,
Kiehl and Briegleb, 1993; Myhre et al., 1998c).
Kiehl et al. (1999) obtained a radiative forcing of -0.187 Wm - 2
using the O3 profile data set describing changes since the late 1970s due to stratospheric depletion alone, consistent with the range of other models (see Shine et al., 1995).

Kiehl uses lambda (λ) as sensitivity, which in my terminology would be 1 / Sensitivity].
Considering that Trenberth and
Kiehl in their energy balance diagrams
