When Amazon bought Mobipocket, it stopped carrying all those other formats and stopped
using Lightning Source as its delivery service for ebooks.

using Lightning Source, but can't seem to figure out if I can have my 8.5 × 11 color book printed HORIZONTALLY — in other words — 11 × 8.5.
Should I use Smashwords to convert to Epub before I set up with Lightning Source or, conversely, is it even necessary to convert if I am

using Lightning source where they require CMYK, I now recommend using RGB.

Let's assume you're
using Lightning Source and that your book has a trim size of 5.5 ″ x 8.5 ″ and 250 pages.
What is important to know, and it is the main reason for me to start
using Lightning Source, is the availability of hard copy edition AND return policy for bookstores and libraries plus the distribution of your book through Ingram and their own catalogue.
There are pros and cons for
using Lightning Source or CreateSpace that I won't go into here.
Here's a tip for anyone thinking of using Lulu to POD... Lulu
uses Lightning Source to print their books for them, so it's cheaper for the author himself to go straight to LS and bypass the middleman.
I use Lightning Source for books I handsell myself.
As for the locally owned bookstores, if you have a really good relationship with the store owner or purchasing agent, you might be able to get your book in if
you use Lightning Source but that is still a long shot.
I'll
use Lightning Source for its distribution partners, and CreateSpace to order books for me.
