cooking apples which are quite sharp, and they kept their shape, turned out a treat, doesn't look as pretty as yours, BUT I think toasted with some pate it would be LUSH!

Instead of the spongy cakes we're
used to today, these layers are more like cookies — firmer, so they slowly soften beneath liberal applications of
apple butter and
cooked apples.
What's in them: 1 medium russet potato, peeled 2 medium beets, peeled Approximately 1/3 butternut squash, peeled * 1 small or medium onion 2 large eggs, egg 1/3 cup whole wheat or regular flour 1 teaspoon salt, plus a little extra for sprinkling over the

Cooks Illustrated recipe which
used grated
apple in the filling to provide a natural pectin - it really kept the filling from falling all over the place.

cooking apples but the truth is,
used in a more savory way, they make an excellent seasonal side dish.
Not to be confused with actual butter, fruit butters (like
apple butter) are spreads similar to jelly, but they
use a different
cooking process.
I
used raw cranberries in this version and was surprised at how sweet they became after
cooking in with the
apples and granola.
Prepare the Grill Dome (or whatever smoker you may be
using) for 225 degrees F. indirect
cooking and add 1 cup of drained
apple and cherry wood chips to the glowing charwood.
The next day, prepare the
cooker indirect at 325
using apple wood for flavor.
Prepare your smoker for a 225 degree F.
cook using maple,
apple and hickory wood.

I also added cinnamon to the

Actually, buttermilk is easy to veganize with the same workaround

cooker applesauce.
But he figured out that by
using the most deep red
apples we could find, kept the peel on,
cooked on low heat and then blended the sauce, it got a beautiful pink / red color.

Both J and I far prefer eating

apples and I happened upon Keepin» it Kind's sugar - free
apple butter recipe.

used a mandolin to slice the sweet potatoes and
apples very thin, so I did not have to adjust the
cooking time or add the sweet potatoes early.
