These statements might sound like the rhetoric used by extreme animal rights groups, but they come from White Coat Waste — a new, unlikely coalition of fiscal conservatives and liberal activists that aims to end federal funding for research involving dogs and other animals by targeting people's pocketbooks in addition to their heartstrings.

Some of these include higher and more predictable federal research funding, shorter graduate and postdoc training periods, greater use of staff scientists, and better career training for students and postdocs.

In 2001, President George W. Bush limited the use of federal funds for research done with new ESCs.

Currently, such experiments can not be done with federal funding in the United States because of a congressional prohibition on using taxpayer funds for research that destroys human embryos.

While the past few years have seen substantial federal and private research funding for infectious disease genomics research, there has been little discussion of the possible ELSIs - for individuals, groups or larger society - of using genomic information in the management of infectious disease.

First, promising to restore the integrity of science while seeking vast medical benefits for many, President Obama repealed the restrictions set by President Bush on the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research.

Lamberth, chief judge of the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, ruled that federal money can not be used to fund hESC reFederal District Court for the District of Columbia, ruled that federal money can not be used to fund hESC refederal money can not be used to fund hESC research.

On March 9, 2009, President Obama lifted the ban that had previously restricted the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research on cell lines that had been created after August 9, 2001.

The scientists claimed that, because they used adult stem cells exclusively in their research, the new rules would increase competition for federal research dollars, thereby affecting their ability to obtain funding.

In an executive order, Bush stated that federal funds could only be used for research on human embryonic stem cell lines that had already been established (only 22 cell lines).

Dr. Story Landis, chair of the NIH Stem Cell Task Force, said states like Maryland, which offer their own public funding to researchers, often help get projects off the ground — and scientists then use their early research to apply for additional federal funding.

Aware of the political ramifications of the research, his laboratory used no federal money during the course of that study (though it would have been eligible for funding).

In May 2012 a federal judge ruled that a case against Harvard Medical School and its teaching hospitals regarding fraudulent research using public funds for Alzheimer's disease was to proceed.

Under federal law, 501 (c)(3) nonprofits can conduct research and make broad statements, but can't use funds for «explicitly political activities such as endorsing candidates or specific legislative proposals.»

Because public education is funded and regulated by the state and federal government, it is necessary for ISDs to use some resources to fund activities that promote public accountability, research, and government communications.

The new bill would provide grants so that states may use federal funds to train teachers on using data to inform classroom practice, require states to tie K — 12 data with early childhood and post-secondary data, and involve educators in the research and peer review process by putting two educators on the National Board for Education Sciences.

Puzzlingly, lack of research evidence has not stimulated rigorous research (funded by the federal government or the nation's many foundations, for example) into why so little if any progress occurred and how federal money was actually used by the schools or departments of education that spent it.

White House and Climate Change Science Program officials have never offered an honest public explanation of why the terms of that dismissal would have legally required (as distinct from an unofficial, secret political agreement) that the White House and the federal agencies suppress a taxpayer - funded, scientifically based assessment sponsored by the federal global change research program, even for purposes of using it as a scientific document or in program planning for research and future assessments.

These genetic tests, which grew out of federal funding for University of Utah research, can detect mutations that speak to much higher risks of breast cancer, which can be used, in turn, to take steps that significantly reduce those risks for women.
