Unlike previous games in the series, this is a battle command, and not the result of
using items in battle.
Some great Zelda - infused mechanics, such as collecting and
using items in battle to counter certain enemy attacks, a few giant boss monsters like King Dodongo and Gohma, and of course massive hoards of petty mobs to chew through.
What makes no sense to me is that when
you use these items in battle, you can travel back to the central town, purchase another 3D model (now that you've found it in the wild), and then turn it into a sticker for around 80 to 300 coins.
You have your standard physical attacks, psychic attacks that use PP (PSI), the ability to
use items in battle, a defend option, a run away option, and the unique option to auto - fight, a saving grace to the jaded baddie battler.
The only trouble occurs when you have to quickly
use an item in battle; under the pressure of a timer, selecting a specific item is a hassle.

The amount of weird and wacky
items is quite immense, and they can all be
used in some way during
battle, normally to great effect.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place can nab you some nice
items and equipment, but pulling a «special» slip gives a keychain which can be
used before
battle for handy special effects like a percentage increase
in experience or money.
Two to four players can compete against themselves
using a variety of
items (including all the special
items) on the new
battle arenas found
in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
Learning when to
use those
items will be key to victory
in many a
battle.

Using weapons crafted
in the game, you can
battle standard Dragon Quest enemies
in real time, take their remains, and
use these to craft even more
items.
In Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem you get tons of crafting
items from
battle that you
use to make new weapons (or rather turn your mirage partners into new weapons, if you want to be precise).
Standing near a player's grave and holding down the «
Use» button allows you to summon a hostile Revenant of that player, allowing you to earn additional amrita and
items if you manage to best it
in battle.
Racing games also build on this by providing
battle modes
in which
items are
used as weapons.
These
items have limited
use in battle and the same applies to the sub-weapons that recharge after a set amount of time once
used.
When
in battle, the three rock - paper - scissors style basic attacks - Power, Tech, and Speed - forced me to put thought into my choices even before considering the special skills, combos, single -
use items, or elemental strengths and weaknesses of each monster.
Players can
use materials found
in battle to unlock different branches of the trees to raise stats, add more combos, and boost drop rates for
items on the field.
You can still
use normal button controls for your
items, but it's great to be able to just tap an
item instead of spending time scrolling through your inventory, especially
in the thick of
battle.
There are even
items you can
use in the midst of
battle that recover one of these chances.

Imagine being
in the heat of a boss
battle, dodging attacks and frantically trying to get
in close to deal damage to the monster's weak point — only to realize you are low on health and need to
use an
item.
