I do not recommend
using pee pads for dogs, as this will create confusion for your dog in regards to whether or not they can use your home as a place to pee or defecate.

What worked
for us was
using a
pee pad over a blanket, keeping Rowan's rump positioned off - center on the
pad, laying a cloth diaper over «Willy» when Rowan played face up, and having one of us be Willy cover monitors (I assume with girls this step is not necessary).
Housetraining
using pee pads is not
for everyone; however, there are special circumstances where this training method is preferred.

used for training or as an everyday alternative to the outdoors when pets are housebound.
If you do not feel comfortable confining your puppy to a crate or if you do not want to
use pee pads, your only other option

for training their puppy to go potty outside,
using pee pads to train a puppy is ideal

The thing is that after two or three weeks at home, when he got all his vaccines, we started to leave the backyard door open
for him to go out whenever he wanted to and we walked him several times a day so he never had the need of
using the
pads again, the problem is that he got so
used to doing his business outside that he forgot what the
pee pads are
for (he sometimes even takes his naps on them) and when we leave him alone (usually not more than 4/5 hours a day) he does his business all over the house, even when we leave some «strategic»
pee pads here and there.
I had some of the same problems with Matilda, you may want to
use two
pads for now to give him more space to
pee or poo.
Training Sammie to
use pee pads might be convenient, but
pee pads lengthen the process
for fully housebreaking a dog, period.
I
use a plastic crate cover which I stand up behind the litter pan which I cover with dog
pee pads and change them once a week — he does this in his litter pan and in his sister's litter pan so I have the same set up
for both.
I have to be honest, though, since your set up with the
pee pads seems to work
for you, I'd be hesitant to change anything since he has such a unique way of
using the box you have!
If
using an exercise pen, make it small enough as to leave room
for only the pup's bed and a
pee pee pad, nothing else.
Instead of newspaper, you can
use a dog
pee pad or the Wizdog, a device consisting of a tray with a grate that keeps your dog from tracking his mess through the house and makes
for painless disposal of the newspapers and waste.
