These can first be taught in the concrete by
using picture cards.
One of CAT's sustainability activities
uses picture cards showing different stages of the production chain such as factories, woodlands or oil rigs to investigate familiar products such as chocolate eggs or mobile phones.
I have
used the picture cards during Circle Time (we choose a card and then we pick a book related to the card and / or think of a Nursery Rhyme).
Students identify the pattern used, predict the next picture in the pattern
using the pictures cards, and then match the picture strip with the letter cards that follows the same pattern.
