The most striking thing to me about these seemingly divergent runs is that (in the absence of a code error) it blows a very large hole in the ideas used to justify
using weather models for climate.
That is certainly true now, because we are
using weather models to try to predict climate.
Forecasting —
uses weather models (i.e., Doppler radar) to predict wind speeds and patterns at various altitudes.
In short, it is formally true that climate modeling «does not
use weather models».
I have
used weather model output extensively for forecasting weather and air quality and it is amazing how well our modern weather models can forecast the weather for several days compared to what I saw in college days in the early 1970's.
