By 8:30 a.m. (the time I
usually ended up rolling out of
bed), I had
read several chapters of a good business book, listened to part of a podcast, spent time
in prayer, done some P90X Yoga, and worked on a side - project that I'd been «too busy» to work on for years.
After dinner as a family, we clean up, bathe the kids,
read books, say prayers, and the kids are
in bed by 8 (
usually).
Their audio versions —
usually read by the authors themselves — make it easy to gain insights and clarity while
in transit, working at your desk, pounding the pavement, or winding down for
bed.
I actually practice mindfulness before I even get out of
bed in the morning, and
usually pair it with heart rate variability
readings from my Sweetbeat tracker so that I can assess how mindfulness practice is directly influencing my stress levels.
Finally, I
usually read before
bed (a chapter a night) and by the time I finish I'm really tired... I literally
read in bed laying on my side.
Reading in bed at night
usually helps me fall asleep!
The «Phantom Thread» filmmaker may have a printout of Princess Margaret's morning routine up on his refrigerator (breakfast
in bed at 9, followed by two hours of listening to the radio and
reading newspapers and then an hourlong bath at 11), but he
usually rises before dawn to get rolling on the day's work.
Usually I will start out playing with her and once she is immersed
in her play I can let her know I am going to
read or change
bed sheets, make phone calls etc... for 20 - 30 minutes before she needs something else to do.
