One of the risks includes
uterine hyperstimulation.
The potential effects of
uterine hyperstimulation on the baby are well known (Simpson & James 2008)- which is why continuous fetal monitoring is recommended during induction.
The study by Selo - Ojeme et al. (2011) also found induction = increased risk of
uterine hyperstimulation; «suspicious» fetal heart rate tracings; and haemorrhage following birth.
A German study found
uterine hyperstimulation occurred in 10 % of women during nipple stimulation, and in 1 % this was accompanied by reversible abnormalities in fetal heart rate patterns.
