Utilitarian Sculpture is a class focused on teaching students how to design and
create functional
objects out of wood.
By obsessively ordering, rearranging and reassembling these apparently low - value, purely
utilitarian materials, Leirner
creates artworks that are both aesthetically pleasing and which tell stories about the overlooked
objects that surround us.
The works
create an intriguing tension around the questions of using so much material for these nonfunctional
objects that masquerade in the form of almost
utilitarian objects.
Both of their works have the quality of a rugged handmade sign post - visual art
objects, but
created as though they serve some
utilitarian purpose.
