But is the financial incentive why many conventional vets don't recognize the dangers of vaccination — or
the vaccine reactions in your dog?
A study published by Purdue in 2005 found correlations between
vaccine reactions in dogs and variables such as age, size, and number of vaccines given.

Researchers (Moore, Guptill, Ward et al, «Adverse events diagnosed within three days of
vaccine administration
in dogs») looked at veterinary records gathered from Banfield veterinary clinics for two years to find any trends
in reactions suffered three days after vaccination.

reactions to
vaccines in sterilized
dogs.
In my experience smaller
dogs, particularly white
dogs have
vaccine reactions at a higher rate than larger, nonwhite
dogs.
Vaccinations and de-worming are up to date, I recommend a cautious approach to some of the harsher
vaccines like Leptospirosis which has been shown to have a high rate of
reactions in sensitve
dogs.
In our last blog post, we talked about our own personal experience with vaccinosis and why, even if your
dog hasn't had an immediate
reaction, you need to be aware of
vaccine dangers.
Your puppy /
dog should never be left alone after vaccinations are given, as any delay
in treatment for allergic
reactions to
vaccines can be fatal.
Conventional veterinarians tend to think that if your
dog doesn't have a
vaccine reaction while they're still
in the clinic, any illness isn't linked to vaccination.
But some of the most serious
vaccine reactions resulting
in chronic illness can take up to several months or longer to appear
in dogs.

reactions than any others, including serious and / or fatal
reactions especially
in small
dogs.

in shock due to car accidents and fights, sudden severe allergies or

We use the latest
vaccines that include Lepto

This is especially dangerous if your
dog isn't completely healthy, or has experienced a

Let's assume that you take your
dog or puppy
in for a vaccination and she suffers a
vaccine reaction.
Although
vaccine reactions can take weeks, months or even years to develop (think of allergies, joint disease, renal disease or hypothyroidism),
in the majority of cases, vets only think of
vaccine reactions if the
dog suffers classic symptoms like sudden explosive diarrhea, lethargy and pain within a few hours of the
vaccine.

in dogs were from the Lepto component.

dogs to be exempt if they have been injured by a previous Rabies
vaccine, or had a severe adverse
reaction.

dog's had a
vaccine reaction in the past, you should tell your vet, and if
in doubt, wait 30 to 60 minutes before taking your
dog home.
One commenter said that leptospirosis
vaccines may cause life threatening
reactions in some small breeds of
dogs.
If the
dog previously had similar
reactions to other things this might indicate some sort of immune system dysfunction but
in that case the
vaccine may have been coincidental to the
reaction if the
dog was exposed to whatever caused the prior episode again around the time of the vaccination.
Veterinarian - diagnosed
vaccine reactions were reported
in 5 % of the
dogs in the ASHGI health survey but rabies was the only single type ofvaccine for which a significant number of responses were submitted.
The
dog has never had a

reaction, life changing illnesses or death.
If the
vaccine is not a «core»
vaccine (parvovirus, distemper, adenovirus - 2 (modified live), and rabies), discuss with your veterinarian whether the risks of the disease
in your locality outweigh the risks posed by the
dog's
reaction.

vaccine has shown very little propensity for causing adverse medical
reactions in dogs, there is ample evidence that it can cause cancerous tumors
in cats (fibrosarcomas).

reaction if a prior trigger occurred at about the same time.
Your options other than annual vaccination are many: have titers done to test your
dog's immunity and only vaccinate when immunity has dropped; discuss with your veterinarian what vaccinations you may be able to safely omit for your
dog; insist that vaccinations be given one at a time to avoid increasing their risks; ask your veterinarian to sign a waiver so that your
dog does not need to get the rabies
vaccine, especially if you have seen a
reaction to this
vaccine in the past.
The
dog's health, age, environment, activities, lifestyle, and whether he has previously had any adverse
vaccine reactions all need to figure
in to the equation.
I have been having titers drawn for years on my
dogs after one of them had a
reaction to the Lepto
vaccine two years
in a row.
Is it possible that
dogs bred
in substandard conditions and who are frequently taken from their mothers before 8 weeks are also part of the
vaccine reaction puzzle?
We suggest if you want your
dog fully vaccinate give each illness's vaccination one at a time, not
in a combo
vaccine to reduce the risk of allergic
reaction.
While international
dog and cat vaccination guidelines warn that we should decrease companion animal vaccination, i.e. «we should aim to reduce the «
vaccine load» on individual animals
in order to minimize the potential for adverse
reactions to
vaccine products» [18], vaccination of humans is increasing at a startling rate.
Obviously, these are components of the
vaccine we don't want to boost especially
in a
dog that genetically is predisposed to an adverse
reaction (e.g. hypersensitivity).

dogs and distemper, consider forgoing the vaccinations entirely or modify the pet's lifestyle so vaccination becomes unnecessary.
