Figure 1 compares our

added measure of teaching quality to the probability of being recognized
for one's research.
Improvements can be
measured in two basic ways: the improvement in performance
for a given group of students from one year to the next (known as a

added approach), or the improvement in performance across different groups of students (which we will refer to as cross-cohort changes).
This allows them to
measure family characteristics (such as parental income) not typically controlled

Provided the movement of teachers in and out of a grade has not changed the makeup of students enrolled in that grade, this finding supports the conclusion that

added of teachers is an unbiased predictor of future test - score gains, as there appears to be no other explanation
for the resulting improvement in test scores.
In February 2012, the New York Times took the unusual step of publishing performance ratings
for nearly 18,000 New York City teachers based on their students» test - score gains, commonly called

measures.

value added that are similar to ours, so it is not surprising that we obtain similar results.
While the

added models utilized by the authors control
for the prior student achievement, the increasingly positive selection into charters almost certainly brings more students with hard - to -
measure positive attributes.

Growth
measures — like «
value added» or «student growth percentiles» — are a much fairer way to evaluate schools, since they can control
for prior achievement and can ascertain progress over the course of the school year.
