Since the growth
of your policy's cash
value is tax - deferred, variable life insurance might be a good consideration if you've maxed out your
retirement account contributions, have a sizable
portfolio of more liquid assets (such as in your brokerage and savings accounts), and are looking for an additional investment vehicle that also offers coverage to your dependents should anything happen to you.
Consider two hypothetical
retirement portfolios, each with a starting
value of $ 500,000.
If the stock market is down in the early years
of your
retirement and you have to sell stocks at a loss to get enough income for your basic expenses, you can really hurt your
portfolio's
value in both the short run and the long run.
He considers declining equity, rising equity and static glidepaths with an annual withdrawal rate
of 4 % (
of the
portfolio value at
retirement) and annual rebalancing during a 30 - year
retirement period.
The idea
of moving to more conservative equity funds in
retirement is not unusual but my position is to maintain the more diversified equity
portfolio (large, small,
value, growth, REITs U.S. & international asset classes).
You are still very young so you have a lot
of time left for compounding to even exceed your projected
portfolio values — you will have a «gilded»
retirement as they say.
If your savings earn, say, 6 % a year in a low - cost diversified
portfolio of 60 % stocks and 40 % bonds, investment growth alone would bring the
value of your
retirement stash just under $ 900,000.
Sixty - one percent
of people age 55 to 75 place a high
value on having guaranteed income to supplement Social Security.2 For some people, annuities can be a valuable addition to a
portfolio that includes Social Security,
retirement savings, and other investments, because they can add an element
of protection and guaranteed income.
For retirees funding their
retirement through systematic withdrawals
of their
retirement portfolio, many advisors suggest limiting withdrawals to 4 %
of the
value of your
portfolio.
In terms
of how this relates to asset allocation in
retirement, if you are comfortable with any given 5 year period being slightly below breakeven on a worst case basis, you could consider having about 5 years» worth
of expenses in more liquid and safe assets and have comfort that the rest
of your
portfolio in stocks will at least hold their
value pretty well.
If you spent 1 / 28th
of your
portfolio in the first year
of retirement, you would be withdrawing 3.6 %
of your
portfolio's
value, less than the 4 % withdrawal rate that has become a popular rule
of thumb.
You could also cash out the cash
value and invest it in something more aggressive; whole life insurance is an inherently conservative play, and because you have a long period
of time before you need money for
retirement, it may make more sense to take the income tax hit now and better utilize that money in a more aggressive investment
portfolio.
A severe or protracted market downturn can erode the
value of a high - risk investment vehicle much faster than it can a typical
retirement portfolio.
Ending your
retirement with one dollar is a «success» by this measure, but we all recognize it would be wise to have some safety margin both in terms
of the rate
of success and the
value of your
portfolio at the end
of any given period.
Bengen encourages retirees to keep an eye on their «current withdrawal rate,» which is the annual drawdown as a percentage
of a
portfolio's
value today (as opposed to its initial
value at the time
of retirement).
If 1.5 %
of your
retirement portfolio's
value goes to fees each year, the calculator estimates that you can withdraw 3 %
of your savings, or $ 30,000, the first year
of retirement, increase that amount for inflation each year and have a 90 % chance that your savings will last at least 30 years.
One issue with the 4 % rule, and variants that use a different percentage, is that the
retirement payout is specified as a percentage
of the
value of the
portfolio as
of the
retirement date.
Remember too that once you start tapping your
portfolio for income in
retirement, the size
of your withdrawals will also help determine how far your
portfolio's
value drops during market downturns, not to mention the extent to which it's able to recover.
What I most want is for you to consider adopting an all -
value flavor for the equity part
of your
retirement portfolio.
By
retirement year 20 (age 60), there would be an additional 7 years
of 5 % appreciation compounded with 3 % dividend yield resulting in a final
portfolio value of $ 412,626, able to generate $ 12,379 a year in tax - free dividends.
Pre-
Retirement Years — focused on risk - adjusted returns with a goal
of getting participants to
retirement with a higher end
portfolio value.
«This approach best addresses the competing goals
of reaching
retirement with the highest expected
portfolio value but with the greatest amount
of certainty.
For example, the 4 % rule states that a retiree can withdraw 4 %
of their initial
portfolio value in the first year
of retirement, then annually adjust the amount for inflation.
Were your
portfolio's
value were to drop 25 % to $ 262,500 in a crash, your probability
of retirement success would fall to 55 % or so.
So if you've got 70 %
of your
retirement portfolio in stocks and 30 % in bonds, you can figure that in a comparable downturn your nest egg would lose roughly 25 %
of its
value (70 %
of -37 % plus 30 %
of 5 % equals 24.4 % — we'll call it 25 %).
A defined contribution plan, where contribution is defined and employer and employee make yearly contributions at
retirement, is based on the market
value of the
portfolio.
Calculate a present
value for a stream
of payments (i.e., Social Security, pension & etc.), add this to your
retirement portfolio and then calculate the equity allocation you are comfortable with.
While we expect our clients»

PortfolioPortfolio Income.
It's a valid point and worth looking into, its just unlikely to result in a significant change in the overall
value of your
portfolio at
retirement age.
Littleadv - would not the currency matter when I start selling the etf to fund my
retirement eg if I had the vanguard world stock etf in usd and the dollar experienced a significant drop, would that not affect my
portfolio, would that not mean that the
value of my etf has dropped?
Many Canadians have had to re-evaluate their early
retirement plans after watching their
portfolios plunge in
value over the past couple
of years.
In the end, adding a permanent life insurance policy to your investment
portfolio can be a good option to help mitigate the risk
of early death as well as build some cash
value that can be used for a variety
of purposes, including
retirement income, but it should never be used as your only method
of investment planning.
That's probably appropriate if you're investing for a long - term goal like
retirement and you're capable
of handling some significant dips in the
value of your
portfolio en route to your goal.
The valuation level that applies on the
retirement day tells us how much
of the starting - point
portfolio value is real, lasting wealth and how much is cotton - candy nothingness fated to be blown away in the wind over the course
of the next 10 years or so.
