While this might not be as big a deal for giants like Ingram and Amazon, who do their own private
data gathering, for
small and medium - sized publishers, as well as self - published authors, this
data is of immense
value.
The
data clearly demonstrates that it is not the commonly tracked
small cap universe as a whole that is plagued by poor stock performance but rather the
smallest of the
small: companies less than about $ 250 million in
value.
The thing that I like most about the book is O'Shaughnessy use of

There is no question that there is support in historical
data for slicing and dicing equity components into
small and
value.
Some of the
data is incomplete, but I will update it as it becomes available (note that I've also included Dimensional Fund Advisors / DFA mutual funds, as we use these low - cost securities with our PWL clients to gain exposure to the
small and
value premiums).

O'Shaughnessy's analysis of the Compustat
data base indicated that
small stocks on average outperformed the average stock by ~ 1.5 % / annum and
value stocks outperformed the average stock by ~ 2.5 % / annum.
Over the 21 15 - year periods into which we can divide this
data, international
small - cap
value stocks compounded, on average, at 12.3 %, making an initial $ 100 investment grow to $ 572.
The IFA Indexes Times Series Construction goes back to January 1928 and consistently reflects a tilt towards
small cap and
value equities over time, with an increasing diversification to international markets, emerging markets and real estate investment trusts as
data became available.
Their
data show that
small and
value companies carried higher risk and that risk was rewarded.
In fact we hope that the
smaller principal components are mostly noise and so the
values fitted to the selected components are more accurate than those fitted to the original
data set.
The number referred to is the number of
data points; I interpret your original post as implying that you believe the
value of the number is the
small number in question — i.e., because 7 or 10 is a
small number, the distinction is obscure.
The mean estimates for the 2010 September Sea Ice Outlook based on May, June, and July
data were close to the observed
value with a rather
small quartile distribution (as a measure of deviation from the mean).
Many physical modelers, and especially climate modelers, seems to think that as long as their models are «science - based» then there is no need to account for uncertainty in their outputs, notwithstanding that the model parameters are tuned with
data, and that aspects of these models are likely to be ill posed (highly sensitive to
small perturbations in the
values assigned to parameters).
A global catalogue of catastrophe losses was constructed (MuirWood et al., 2006), normalised to account for changes that have resulted from variations in wealth and the number and
value of properties located in the path of the catastrophes... Once the
data were normalised, a
small statistically significant trend was found for an increase in annual catastrophe loss since 1970 of 2 % per year.
These probabilities will be quite
small, even for the parameter
values that fit the
data best.
PCA was performed as the first step (after areal adjustment) on the gridded instrumental
data, 1902 — 1995 and the individual proxy series from 1902 — 1980 were calibrated against the corresponding EOFs of the instrumental
data matrix by singular
value decomposition to determine retention of reconstructed PCs for each proxy series and then tested for robustness against the 1854 — 1902 validation period as well as a
smaller subset of instrumental / historical EOFs going back to the 16th century.
At any reasonable level of the latter (i.e., a plausible effective climate sensitivity
value), the OHC
data can't be reconciled with more than a
small contribution from internal variability.
The proper answer to 3) is «we don't know what the feedback is, but the evidence at face
value suggests it is very
small either way», but it is absurdly early days still as far as reliable
data accrual is concerned.
So far, in my own analyses, I have been treating zero rings as half of the
smallest non-zero
value in the
data set (e.g. when doing log transforms).
... One doesn't expect Team adjustments to leave even
small scraps on the table and this proved to be the case here as well — the added
data substantially increased 20th century
values and substantially lowered 1150 - 1250AD
values, thereby altering the medieval - modern differential in favor of the 20th century.
Even if the properly centered PCA is applied to Mann's NOAMER tree - ring
data, you get a
small number of dominant singular -
values / eigenvalues.
Also, although there is no practical
value in trying to ascertain the color of crows by virtue of seeing a red tulip, the principle involves Bayesian reasoning that has substantial practical applicability in science — i.e., the notion that probabilities change on the basis of observed
data, even when the changes are too
small to be obvious.
This may be totally off, since I know squat about climate science & the high - powered statistical programs used, but when there is a dearth of
data in the social sciences (not enough to give low enough p
values on correlations & regressions, simply due to
small numbers of
data, which is sometimes due to loading in too many control variables), we sometimes turn to chi - square & log - linear analysis to see if actual
data reveal patterns incongruent with expected patterns.
This second term is usually
small for a date when the proxies are well within the range represented by the calibration
data, but may become large when the equation is used to extrapolate to proxy
values outside that range.
Security was also an important factor, with 53 % of solos and 47 % of
small firms lawyers
valuing cloud computing's robust
data backup and recovery features.
But if you
value the privacy of your
data, that's a
small price to pay.
Mike works with a number of
small businesses and residential users and spends a lot of time trying to educate his customers on the
value of backing up their
data.
Over the past 24 hours, the blockchain has been inundated with
small, spam - like transactions that are large in
data size, but significantly
small in bitcoin
