The spherules, known as microtektites, are droplets of molten rock that were melted and thrown out of the impact crater by the energy of the projectile, or condensed from rock that was
vaporized upon impact.
The researchers hypothesize that a comet hit our planet at the beginning of the PETM, bringing with it its own supply of carbon — and
vaporizing carbon - containing sediment here on Earth
upon impact.
