Experience is gained this time around by finishing quests, either story related or a wide
variety of sidequests.
As is standard for most open - world games, there are a ton of hidden secrets and
a variety of sidequests that litter the land.
At this point — Destroying the Black Omen in CT and obtaining the airship in WOR in FFVI — the game's main plotline takes a backseat to more free - form world exploration and
a variety of sidequests and dungeons.
Each town will contain
a variety of sidequests that will lead to combat and status bonuses.

Thankfully, the developers added some
variety in the overworld maps and if the dungeons were more interesting and
sidequests played a larger role then I could see this being a contender for one
of the best modern RPGs.
HZD has a
variety of enemies that act differently both in and out
of combat, upgradeable armor and weapons, dialogue trees,
sidequests that reward you and have
variety (rather than collect Korok Seeds nine hundred times), and skill trees that grow with you, rather than hand you everything at the quest's onset.
