Individual responses continue to be based on a range of methods:
statistical, numerical models, comparison with previous rates of sea ice loss, composites of several
approaches, estimates based on
various non sea ice datasets and trends, and subjective information (the heuristic category).
When many groups of people treating
various subsets of adjusted and raw data using a variety of
statistical approaches all come up with almost exactly the same trend, the evidence is strong is that such reconstructions are robust.
The use of different
statistical scaling
approaches (including whether the data are smoothed prior to scaling, and differences in the period over which this scaling is carried out) also influences the apparent spread between the
various reconstructions.
