With increasing availability of zero - emission cars over the coming years, when will citizens at large start to question the idea that every vehicle has an «exhaust pipe» that just belches harmful substances into our shared air?

In Boulder and Toronto, we found that D5 was present in urban air at mass concentrations comparable to those of benzene, a chemical that is a marker for vehicle exhaust.

Exhaust emissions of 23 individual city buses at EURO III, EURO IV and EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) emission levels were measured in Helsinki, Finland.

A chemical engineer from the University of Houston is leading a $ 2.1 - million project to find new catalytic materials that work at lower exhaust temperatures, allowing automakers to build vehicles that operate more efficiently while retaining the ability to clean emissions before they leave the tailpipe.

The findings, presented at the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, said that every night chemicals from vehicle exhaust and other human created sources are broken down and prevented from becoming smog, ozone and other irritants by a form of nitrogen oxide called the nitrate radical.

As the motor industry moves further away from the days of producing the so - called, «Gas Guzzlers» and into vehicles that are environmentally friendly, a compromise is sought to keep the balance between preserving the experience of the joy of an open car and an empty road and keeping exhaust emissions at an acceptable level.
