The study illustrates the genetic foundation of evolution, including how genes can flow from one species to another, and how different
versions of a gene within a species can contribute to the formation of entirely new species, the researchers report in the journal Nature.

Upon sequencing the DNA, they found that DNA fragments containing mutated
genes — markers
of tumors — were typically smaller than healthy
versions of the

within the same patient.
Some alleles corresponded to higher levels
of IL - 1ß, and people with these
versions of the
genes were five times more likely to suffer from stomach cancer — perhaps because a surplus
of IL - 1ß, by shutting down acid production and sustaining an inflammation
of the infected areas, allows H. pylori to spread further
within the stomach, the authors speculate.
The group took the first step toward their goal
of a novel engineering strategy for yeast by creating what is known as a cDNA library: a collection
of over 90 %
of the
genes from the genome
of baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), arranged
within a custom segment
of DNA so that each
gene will be, in one
version, overactive
within a yeast cell, and in a second
version, reduced in activity.
It is anticipated that
within the next few years, several
versions of gene drive will be developed that build in even more safeguards to eliminate non-target impact.
It tended toward greater heterozygosity — a mix
of gene versions —
within individual dogs, maintained genetic diversity in the breed, and therefore lessened the likelihood that bad
genes for things like eye disease would match up.
