In the Revised Standard
Version (1946) this
passage is set apart in small italic type, and the marginal note
reads: «Other ancient authorities add 7:53 - 8:11 either here or at the end
of this gospel or after Luke 21:38, with variations
of the text.»
The fact that an ancient table
of contents, already referred to in the Latin
version of the fifth or sixth century, omits mention
of the Testimonium (though, admittedly, it is selective, one must find it hard to believe that such a remarkable
passage would be omitted by anyone, let alone by a Christian, summarizing the work) is further indication that either there was no such notice or that it was much less remarkable than it
reads at present.
Such is the
reading of the American Standard
Version.5 So absolute a doctrine could hardly be based, surely, upon so equivocal a
passage.
A new
version of the SAT has longer and harder
reading passages and more words in math problems, which some educators and college admissions officers to fear will penalize students who have not been exposed to a lot
of reading, or who speak a different language at home — like immigrants and the poor.
