Center for Investigative Reporting, to put together a narrative for what is tentatively titled (and aptly named) Trading In Starvation.
Very charming, funny and a great turn for Charlize Theron as the struggling mother
of three at the
center of this
story.
For those unfamiliar with the comic, the overall plot
of the
story essentially
centers on the characters in the past being warned about and — trying to avoid — a
very unappealing dystopian future.
Their journey — physical and metaphorical — takes them to some
very dark places, and though the film has elements
of gentle humor that leaven the proceedings — and two fine performances from Jay Duplass («Transparent «-RRB- as Nick and Linas Phillips (Young Adolescents) as Conrad — we can never get away from the uncomfortable fact that writer / director Davis (editor on Duplass's documentary Kevin) has made a conscious decision to put a mass murderer at the
center of his
story.
Over the last few weeks a pair
of very different films that both
center around folk
stories have arrived on Blu - ray in the US.
It's a
very tough movie to watch (it's violent, intense, unbelievably sad and even infuriating at times), but like the crime novel at the
center of the
story, it demonstrates the power that a great piece
of fiction can have on you, even one as polarizing and challenging as this.
The film presents that journey as a series
of false starts (An episode with three
very talkative and
very,
very dense trolls is a highlight and offers the first instance
of a few dei ex machina within the
story; Tolkien, obviously aware
of his proclivity for using the device, invented a new word — eucatastrophe — as a substitute), and it's not until the company leaves Rivendell that the narrative finds its footing and emotional
center.
Less Than Zero is a mixed bag, slick and energetic with a
very popular soundtrack, but all
of its strengths are mere bells and whistles that actually distract for the personal
story that should have been front and
center from the get - go.
Although the
story is
very different, in many ways Roger Dodger is a less commercial, more adult version
of About a Boy, with both films
centering around an egotistical womanizer who learns a thing or two when taking a younger boy under his wing.
I continue to hear the many horror
stories of doing business with service
centers such as AutoNation Toyota Cerriitos and this was a prime example
of very poor customer service and questionable business practices via a service manager who should be trained to provide the hghest level
of customer service and integrity.
That's the backdrop for the love
story which is at the
center of this novel - the politics
of a
very volatile era.
