I did my
recent paintings specifically in response to a
very particular history of
painting.
While most
recent painting has drifted toward a formalist abstraction that offers almost nothing to talk or write about, that
very emptiness has recently become notable, as the new demand for these young, meaningless abstractions continues to redefine huge segments of the contemporary art market.
In a
recent interview with DER SPIEGEL, the German artist Georg Baselitz said «women don't
paint very well.
In some of the
recent work the
paint seems
very thick; the brush strokes are extremely visible and present.
This Kent Place Gallery exhibition is a carefully selected timeline, including strong pieces from all periods, reaching back to a few
very early works from 1976 and concluding with
recent paintings.
It also includes 27
very recent works made since 2002, including his series of glass constructions; the Silicate series; all six Cage
Paintings; and his iconic
painting «September,» a powerful depiction of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001.

recent paintings speak to a healthy self - confidence not only in his artistic process, but also in the
very enterprise of abstract
painting.
especially the Wall of Light series, and that the earlier
paintings look so
very different to the more
recent ones was more of a surprise than I expected.
Regarding the
recent paintings and drawings of artist David Humphrey, they are
very curious indeed.
His
recent paintings too - weird pixilated abstracted canvases - are
very typical of what
painting is doing these days in that it is not so much about anything other than the language - it does not even matter how it is arranged, it is almost symbolic.
If figurative work has been unstylish in
recent years within the micro-trending art world in favour of more lazy conceptual and minimal works, then let this show serve to reassert the things viewers could never really get rid of liking anyway, like skill and sincerity and immediate, emotional, gutsy work; thoughtful and intense and odd works, rendering and likeness and oil
paint, works that may even celebrate that
very un-cool topic, beauty.
A
very recent success is that the Armand Hammer Museum (possibly my favorite museum), acquired my
painting «Surrender».
Overall, this
recent series of still life
paintings demonstrates a symbiosis of abstraction and represenation that has been at the
very core of Resika's oeuvre.
For all their individual magnificence, however, no one of these
paintings eclipses any other; the huge, exhilarating spacious canvases of
recent years cast their radiance over the blunt and earthbound quality of the
very earliest
paintings; this, in turn, resonates throughout Still's mature work with a persistent undertone of epic heroism.
For Katz's latest exhibition in London, gallerist Timothy Taylor has chosen to bring out some
very early pencil and ink drawings made by the artist on the New York subway during his student days and to show these alongside
recent landscape
paintings and sculptures.
