Alaria is an attractive olive - brown seaweed kelp found in the lower tidal zone on moderate to
very rocky shores and can grow two to three metres (six to ten feet).
This side of the island has
a very rocky shore, so beach shoes are a must.

The water may not be
very deep, nor the
shore very far away, but reaching safety for a young woman (Blake Lively) stranded on a
rocky outcrop still means having to brave the dangers of an encircling shark.
The best way to reach them is to swim out from the northern or southern
shores, which are
very rocky on the surface.
The spectacular and
rocky eastern
shore is too dangerous for swimming, the currents are
very strong on the Caribbean side.

very rocky where it meets the water.
While the waters are shallow close to
shore it's worth remembering that further out, at around 14 meters, there can be a
very sudden change to deep water, as
rocky underwater drops are common.
