very small minority devoted their booth exclusively (or nearly so) to the work of a single artist.
We're talking about a
very small world; basically 10
galleries in New York that might have been important.
This is quite remarkable coming from those
very top - tier
galleries — perhaps they understand how much value there is in being surrounded by
smaller and more dynamic colleagues, and how much their own success is squeezing out those

If the
very top of the contemporary art market is thriving, one might ask why it matters that
smaller galleries are closing and
gallery districts relocating across the country.
From such monuments, it takes a moment to adjust to the
small scale of Hodgkin's paintings themselves, hung
very far apart on walls dramatically painted eau de nit, mailbag grey and mustard yellow, at Tate Britain's sweeping main
galleries.
The patterns which emerge through tearing, pasting and scraping are as much reminiscent of works by Kurt Schwitters or Robert Rauschenberg as they are evocative of Francis Rose's predilection for minor vandalism when surreptitiously removing
small samples of particularly attractive wallpapers from French chateaux and English country houses to fashion his
very own take on the livre d'or in the 1930s: a scrapbook of wallpaper fragments (acquired by the Whitworth Art
Gallery after Rose's 1988 retrospective exhibition at England & Co).
