My lack of familiarity with all of
the video game references did not distract nor turn me off on this book.

I don't understand all of the
references (
video games and the love of spread sheets), but there is always something in there that brightens my day.
But if you don't immediately grasp the
reference being made, it shouldn't be missed by any
video game enthusiast, or amateur historian.
Obviously, most of the
video game references and visual cues are extremely well
done, but (and this is especially the case after multiple viewings) I found that to be the least engaging aspect of the film.
When they
reference popular memes or
video games like Super Smash Bros, it doesn't feel forced or slapdash.
You might be tempted to skip all the dialog (as I
did at first) but to appreciate all the hard work that went into this
game you should just read along and enjoy because Retro City Rampage doesn't stop at
video game references, oh no, it dives into pop culture of the 1980s from movies to music.

did a lot of research and
reference for the
game throughout development, which included lots of
videos, photos, and speaking with soldiers directly and meeting with them, going to their bases, etc..
