Shortly after its release, Twitter announced its acquisition of live
video streaming app Periscope and cut off
Meerkat's access to Twitter's social graph.
We talked about the
app Meerkat a couple of years ago as being one of the first new live
stream video tools, where you could live
stream to people where you happened to be, at a concert or a speech or anywhere in public that you wanted to live
stream.
It's also worth noting that Snap's 16 - person group
video chat is strikingly similar to Houseparty, the
video chat
app launched by the founders of live
streaming app Meerkat.
Meerkat was the first of the new breed of
streaming apps, designed to take full advantage of cell networks that can handle
video quality higher than that of a moldy potato.
Also, a new feature will allow you to
stream live
video straight to YouTube (a la Periscope and
Meerkat), from within the camera
app itself.
A full version of the
app for Android is in the works, but right now, a hastily assembled
Meerkat app for Android simply lets you watch
videos; you can't
stream them.
