The new odor, a commingling of the vapors of turpentine, rotten eggs and old oysters, comes from dimethyl sulfoxide, better known as DMSO, the controversial and often illegally used drug hailed
by a growing legion of amateur and professional
athletes who
view it as a panacea for many ills ranging from sprained ankles to tendinitis and ripped muscles.
Besides the 2013 University of Washington study, a number of other recent studies have found education ineffective in improving self - reporting
by athletes, adding to a growing body of evidence challenging the conventional wisdom that inadequate
athlete concussion knowledge is the principal barrier to increased reporting, and suggesting that one of the best ways to combat underreporting
by athletes of concussion symptoms may be to shift the focus of educational efforts towards helping coaches facilitate concussion reporting, the theory being that
athletes will be more likely to report concussion symptoms if they no longer think that they will be punished
by the coach for reporting, such as
by losing playing time or their starting position, perceived
by their teammates as letting them down, or
viewed by their coach as «weak,» all of which have been documented in numerous studies over the past decade as reasons
athletes are reluctant to report concussion symptoms.
What continues to be lost, in my
view, in much of what the media has reported over the last six years about the results of autopsies conducted
by researchers at the Sports Legacy Institute in Boston on the brains of
athletes - autopsies which show the presence of the dark splotches of tau protein which are the tell - tale sign of CTE - which is that they provide, at most, anecdotal evidence suggesting a possible connection.

view by clicking here), I offered some suggestions on how each of us — whether we be parent, coach, official, athletic trainer, clinician, current or former professional
athlete, sports safety equipment manufacturer, whether we were there representing a local youth sports program, the national governing body of a sport, or a professional sports league, could work together as a team to protect our country's most precious human resource — our children — against catastrophic injury or death from sudden impact syndrome or the serious, life - altering consequences of multiple concussions.
Given that concussion risk is influenced
by many factors in addition to impact biomechanics,
viewing an
athlete's head - impact data may provide context for the clinician working on the sidelines, but impact sensors should not replace clinical judgment.
While neurocognitive testing is widely
viewed as the cornerstone of the concussion - assement process, when used in isolation, it should never be used
by itself, but rather in conjunction with symptom and other (e.g. balance, visual) assessments in diagnosing concussion and the readiness of an
athlete for return to play after completing a symptom - limited graduated exercise protocol;
