The opening shot of a
movie can tell us a lot
about how to
view and interpret what follows.
These aren't reviews per se and they won't always be
about movies I necessarily like — just
movies you should know
about and any social implications they might have that would make them worthwhile
viewing.
The most interesting thing
about this
movie (
viewing it in 2012) is the idea people had back then that being free of human entanglements was the only thing worth striving for.
I think that a
movie can only be an adjunct or a supplement to books, to different points of
view, to scholars, historians and your own teachers — I said this
about Schindler's List also.
While the
movie does all of its characters the favor of not condescending to them or their perspectives — a Bible Study group that might have been played for snickers is accorded, at the very least, a neutral
view — its strategy of withholding both particular characters and information
about their actions (the mine supervisor played by Josh Lucas doesn't show up until a half hour or so into the picture), while perhaps looking attractively, insinuatingly oblique on paper, has on the screen the general effect of blunting potential emotional impact.
In fact, repeat
viewings have stopped me from asking where it ranks in comparison to the other
movies that came out this year and started me thinking
about where it ranks in my favorite films of all time.
Although that could be its inherent intention, depending on how you want to
view the ending to the
movie, and the book within the
movie, I can help but wonder
about it's reception of the roles were changed.
But the
movie's coyness in committing to a point of
view about the assassination and its focus on the hapless interviewer rather than the killer ultimately rob the
movie of interest and meaning.
Granted, this
movie is not historically accurate, and I knew very little
about P.T. Barnum before
viewing this film.
About halfway through the
movie, the point of
view shifts to that of Nick and Jake, who explain that they're randomly selecting Brooke and Caleb as their target couple to illustrate the dangers of presenting too much personal information on social media.
Her
views may have mellowed as she's become accustomed to life with a normal family (a theme that runs throughout the
movie), but when he asks her
about her former life, she's a firebrand with no regrets and the determination that she would do it all again if given the opportunity.
«The Theory of Everything» is
about the power of the human spirit, and while the first half makes for more compelling
viewing compared to the generic story beats that encompass Hawking's later years, Redmayne and Jones are so good that even if their performances overshadow the
