Though visually never less than striking, acted with rough - edged
vigorousness by the three leads, and laced with a couple
of nicely unresolved ambiguities, Zvyagintsev's bid for political relevance is hobbled by the film's melodrama and ultimately it's all very obvious — but it makes its point, and it leaves Winter Sleep all the more anemic by comparison.
