SAN FRANCISCO — Misconceptions about California
wines were shattered four decades ago in Paris when two
of the state's
wines — Stag's Leap
Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, both
vintage 1973 — earned top scores in a blind
tasting against the finest French
wines.
The vineyards have so far escaped the direct ravages
of the worst bushfires for 30 years but winemakers fear their grapes may have fallen victim to «smoke taint», which results in
wines that
taste like an ashtray and can ruin an entire
vintage.
Standouts for me among the older
wines were a remarkably fresh and floral 2010 Voyager Estate Project 95, a beautifully precise 2011 Lenton Brae Wilyabrup, a super-complex and long -
tasting 2013 Deep Woods Reserve and (again) the intensely - flavoured 2013 Vasse Felix Heytesbury, while the most delicious
of the younger
vintages was the 2016 Fraser Gallop Parterre (see below).
Some
of my least preferred
wines turned out to be the most expensive and revered
of the French Grand Crus (thanks in large part to what
tasted like excessive botrytis influence), while some
of the stars turned out to be some
of the cheapest
wines on the table, such as the 2013 Fraser Gallop Parterre (the current, 2016
vintage is reviewed below).
The
vintages covered 2005 to 2016 across 16
wines (it would have been good to have had some older
vintages — the corresponding cabernet
tasting included
wines back to the 1980s — but there wasn't enough stock for the large number
of tasters).
Natural
wine is built on word -
of - mouth, with winemakers and the smaller clutch
of buyers and importers meeting at fairs and what Campbell calls «
wine salons» to
taste new bottles and generally hang out — or they visit friends» wineries, who happen to have new neighbors with an interesting
vintage ready for the tastevin.
In addition, the ProWein Forum in Hall 7.1 will feature special events: in line with the anniversary

Wine Institute (DWI) will offer the «20 Years
