Vinyl planks should be installed against the longest wall (so running in the direction the long way).
I think
the vinyl planks can go over existing floors as well.
The product we ended up choosing was the Allure Isocore
vinyl planks which are available exclusively at Home Depot in Canada.
While the product cost was a bit higher than laminate,
vinyl planks are easy to install yourself and are completely waterproof.
For the dining and kitchen area, we installed new
vinyl planks ($ 500).
After sanding and prepping the board, we laid out some of
the vinyl planks to determine the layout.
You can even pair wood effect vinyl flooring with original wooden features, as
our vinyl planks are so detailed & realistic that they're almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

I agree with @Laureen Youngblood I've also installed one of those click type
vinyl planks for a motel chain that's exposed to very low income clients, we didn't put glue before but once it's wet, it goes up, so we started putting glue, it solved the buckling problem, maintenance wise not a good idea.
I'll put the stick down
vinyl planks in the kitchen and baths over the old vinyl sheeting unless I feel like doing tile.

vinyl planks can be bought at lowes and home depo a box cost me $ 34 dollars and it covered 45 Sq ft. Very easy to put on just peel the back and stick down, Cut ur edges with an exacto knife and use the contact paper for ur trim.
