These
findings allowed researchers to create a chimera virus: a mouse virus with a human
viral gene that can be used to test molecules that inhibit human LANA protein in an animal model of disease, treating not only human herpes virus infection but also its associated cancers.
Apart from their introns, the versions of c - src
found in fishes, birds and mammals are all closely related to the
viral gene v - src and to one another.
Virgin, an immunologist, said he thinks the new
findings will produce a more complicated but also much more insightful picture of how human, bacterial and
viral genes influence human health.
More than 80 percent of the
viral gene sequences he
found were new to science.
What emerged from their work was the
finding that the girl had inherited two differently mutated copies of the
gene IRF7, which encodes a protein that amplifies the production of interferon, a critical part of the body's response to
viral infections.
Gene therapy researchers have
found that a popular
viral vector used to insert disease - curing
genes into mice has a dangerous down side: it can apparently trigger liver tumors.
In the new study, the team genetically inactivated HIV - 1 in transgenic mice, reducing the RNA expression of
viral genes by roughly 60 to 95 percent, confirming their earlier
findings.
And when they sequenced Sputnik's genome, they
found its small ring of DNA contained
genes from three different
viral families, including Mamavirus.
However, the new, larger study
found that the effect of
viral replication capacity was very early after infection, and was independent of both initial
viral load and whether individuals carried certain protective variants of immune
genes called HLA that positively influence immune responses to HIV.
They injected pregnant mice with a chemical that simulates
viral infection and
found that their offspring did, indeed, show higher levels of the
gene in their brain tissue.
Bracoviruses can no longer replicate themselves: instead, the
genes needed for making the
viral particles have become incorporated into the wasp genome, a
finding made in 2009 by a team led by Jean - Michel Drezen, who is now at François Rabelais University in Tours, France.
They initially scanned mammalian genome databases to
find these
viral remnants, but they also confirmed that filoviral
gene remnants were present in the DNA from a dead bat stored in a lab freezer and from the zoo's wallaby.
To try to pin an age on these fossil
genes and determine when these ancient infections happened, Taylor and his co-authors — virologist Jeremy Bruenn, and bioinformatics specialist Robert Leach, both also of SUNY Buffalo — compared the
viral remnants in different species and
found they were nearly identical, indicating that they infected mammals only once early in evolution, and then the
viral remnants were passed down as the groups diverged.
Now, a novel computational method shows that a
viral protein
found in EBV - infected human cells may activate
genes associated with increased risk for autoimmunity.
Analysis of the Nematostella vectensis (an Anthozoan) genome and the Hydra magnipapillata (a Medusozoan) EST library identified several herpes - like
viral genes and mRNAs within the draft sequences supporting a hypothesis that herpes - like viruses are
found in all Cnidarians and likely have co-evolved with the metazoans.
