The artists featured in the exhibition use non-traditional visual media such as video, performance, and photo - installation to push the limits of art production at a time when the concept of a singular culture was under scrutiny.
Influenced by Sontag's 1965 essay «The Imagination of Disaster», Golden explores cultural anxieties in relation to visual culture; by painting the «unthinkable» — be it conflict, apocalypse or a long lost time - period — the artist exposes universal concerns of the human psyche.»
Vicuña's quipu transform this ancient practice into a visual metaphor for the collisions of two competing cultures and worldviews: the Andean universe of oral communication spatialized through an embodied, nonlinear encounter with time, and the Western mapping of time through the linear, teleological unfolding of the printed word.
Yet, due to the visual superimpositions of present times, artists have started to shy away from the rigid limitations of - isms related to the «non-objective» or «reductive» and have embedded existing ideas, confluence of styles and approaches into the contemporary world, the here and now, mingling with popular culture as well as branching out of the studio practice inherent in painting as we know it and as the majority still likes to understand it.
A major painting by Williams, a masterful blend of color and geometry, is mounted at the entrance of the visual art galleries of the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. Born in rural Cross Creek, N.C., Williams was raised in New York, where he still lives and works, splitting his time between the city and Connecticut.

Through her investigations of visual overlaps between cultures, time periods and geographies, she confronts and examines ideas of the female body, race, beauty and community.
Nearly 50 years later, at a time when our relationship with computers permeates every aspect of visual culture, this exhibition offers documentation of Cybernetic Serendipity to highlight its impact and continued relevance today.
By inserting them into the western art - historical canon, black women are given visibility, provoking a conversation about the representation of the black female body in popular culture, its absence from that canon, and how much this visual representation in art has evolved over time.
These time consuming and labor demanding installations represent artist's visual commentary of consumerist culture and mass production, and show his careful artistic observation of the sunlight in nature.
His work, described by New York Times critic Holland Cotter as charged with «psychic irritation and urgency», often features motifs of Native American visual culture such as totem poles, teepees, and hawks, while weaving in elements of popular culture that interrogate his own complex, multilayered identity.
Sometimes Oakoak's works feature original characterizations; at other times there are visual references to the popular culture of comics, and even other street artists.
I hope to sort - of take a visual snapshot of this time in history, when so many bloggers / Instagrammers are able & eager to put something out there and really shape culture in a positive way.
